There is no separate subscription for Copilot and no add-on fee. If you are already paying for Sage Accounting, you already have access to it. This is a significant positioning decision from Sage — they are treating AI as a core part of the product rather than a premium upsell, which means even a sole trader on the £18/mo Start plan gets access to the same AI capabilities as a business on the Plus plan.

Automated Invoice Chasing

This is the feature that delivers the most immediate, measurable value for most small businesses.

How it works

When a customer's invoice becomes overdue, Sage Copilot can automatically draft and send a follow-up email chasing payment. You do not need to remember which invoices are overdue, compose an email, or even open your email client. Copilot monitors your outstanding invoices, identifies which ones have passed their payment terms, and sends a professionally worded payment reminder on your behalf.

You stay in control. Copilot drafts the chasing email and you can review, edit, or approve it before it is sent. You can also set it to send automatically based on rules you define — for example, send a first reminder 3 days after the due date, a second reminder at 14 days, and a firmer follow-up at 30 days. The tone escalates appropriately with each stage.

Why it matters

Late payments are the single biggest cash flow problem for UK small businesses. Nearly two-thirds of invoices are paid late, and 42% of businesses say late payments have prevented them from paying their own staff on time. How it works

The accuracy is high. Copilot extracts totals, tax amounts, and dates from receipts and invoices reliably, reducing the need for manual data entry. Sage has gone beyond standard Copilot functionality with the launch of the UK's first MTD AI Agent — an agentic AI capability built on top of Copilot specifically designed to handle Making Tax Digital compliance.

How it works

The MTD Agent transforms quarterly income updates into a seamless workflow for accountants and bookkeepers. It organises client information, reduces manual admin, and automates the preparation of quarterly submissions required under MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment. First-release capabilities landed in October 2025, with full automation being added ahead of the April 2026 MTD deadline.

Why it matters

MTD for ITSA becomes mandatory from April 2026 for sole traders earning over £50,000. This means quarterly digital reporting to HMRC — a completely new obligation for hundreds of thousands of businesses. The MTD Agent is Sage's answer to the increased workload this creates, automating the preparation and submission process so that quarterly compliance does not become a quarterly burden.

For accountants managing multiple clients, the MTD Agent is particularly significant. Instead of manually preparing quarterly updates for each client, the agent handles the organisation, data preparation, and submission workflow — allowing practices to scale their MTD compliance work without proportionally scaling their team.

What Sage Copilot Cannot Do

Copilot is powerful, but it is not a replacement for an accountant. Being clear about its limitations is important.

It cannot give tax advice. Copilot can guide you on how to record transactions and which VAT rate to apply based on HMRC rules, but it cannot advise you on tax planning, business structure, or strategic financial decisions. That still requires a qualified accountant.
It cannot fix fundamental data problems. If your bank transactions are not reconciled, your invoices are not entered, or your categories are set up incorrectly, Copilot's insights will be based on incomplete or wrong data. AI cannot compensate for missing records — it can only work with what is in the system.
It cannot handle every edge case. Complex partial exemption calculations, multi-entity consolidations, and unusual transaction structures may still need human expertise. Copilot handles the 90% of routine scenarios very well, but the remaining 10% still needs professional judgement.
It does not learn across businesses. Copilot learns from your business data, but it does not share insights between different businesses. Your competitor's patterns do not influence your recommendations — which is good for privacy but means it has no benchmarking capability against industry averages.

Sage Copilot does not cost anything extra — it is included in your Sage Accounting subscription — so the question is not whether it is worth paying for, but whether it is worth using. The answer, for almost every small business, is yes.
